LUIS ARAGONÉS

Department of Civil Engineering, Escuela Politécnica Superior, University of Alicante.

Current European project:

Smart control of the climate resilience in European Coastal Cities (SCORE) -> Societal Challenges – Climate Action, Environmental, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials (CLIMATE)

How can your European research project help society now or in the future?

The Score project aims to provide ecosystem-based solutions to climate change in coastal cities.

How is research done on this topic? What kind of results are obtained?

Solutions are evidence-based. Many of these evidences are obtained from Information and Communication Technologies. The results are related to:

  • Maritime climate.
  • Surface drainage.
  • Regeneration of beaches.
  • Protection of the coastal coast.

How’s your work team?

My team is multidisciplinary, where there are Civil Engineers and Computer Engineers specialized in maritime engineering, urbanism, ICT’s, etc.

What challenges do you face for the future?

The challenge is to be able to provide solutions (based on evidence and scientific rigor) to a city like Benidorm to contain the events that are occurring as a result of Climate Change.

Why is it important for people to support and institutions to fund research projects like this?

Considering that 75% of the world’s population lives on the coast, if projects like this are not supported, the only solution we would have would be to go backwards before the continuous advance of the sea and have more and more.
