Schedule, Workshop

The Vice Chancellor of Inclusion, Sustainability and Sports of the University Miguel Hernández (UMH) organizes the #UMHFamilyFest. Science GTS joins the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the UMH with scientific workshops:
Genetics:

The DNA
• Augmented reality: Participants can see themselves with different 3D molecules responsible for life through augmented reality cards.
• DNA origami: built on paper, with the assistance of volunteers.
• DNA mural: 6m2 banner printed with the complete genome of a bacterium (Mycoplasma genitalium). Volunteers will explain how these 580,070 letters give life to a simple organism.
• Code your name: Workshop to transform the participant’s name into genetic code.

Physics: The dancing spheres
Giant Mach pendulum made with a metal structure and billiard balls. You will learn the concept of period and angular momentum. It is constructed so that not all pendulums make the same number of oscillations. The rope measure is adjusted for each ball so that the next pendulum always makes one more swing at the same time. This means that the balls are synchronized in pairs over time but, first, they dance creating the movement of a snake.
Do you have super powers?
Participants will learn about the electrical properties of cells and muscle tissue through a non-invasive electromyography workshop. With all safety measures, surface electromyographic electrodes will be placed that record the potential for action of the muscle membrane. Participants can see that action potential recorded on a screen. Different experiments will be carried out (movement, force, intention without movement, etc.) and the different signals recorded will be analyzed with the participants.

Make a volcano in eruption
In volcanoes, liquid and incandescent rocks, gases and fumes are brought to the surface through the earth’s crust. To learn, there is no way to experiment. You can make your own volcano and trigger a bubbling gas eruption using vinegar and baking soda. How does the eruption occur? All chemical compounds are acidic, basic or neutral. By mixing an acid and a base, they neutralize each other and form new compounds such as water or carbon dioxide (CO2). This happens with vinegar (which is acid) and bicarbonate (which is basic). CO2 is the gas responsible for the formation of bubbles that simulate the volcanic eruption. The chemical reaction will end when the reagents are consumed or at least one of them.
Food detectives.

There are foods that do not have labels. Will they want to sneak us a food fraud? Put on your robe and research its composition in a food science and technology laboratory.

Project Cavern, do you believe everything?
Do you stop to think about the information that comes to you through social networks? Learn about the lie and its forms; the half-truths and the danger of narrations and, finally, the philosophical problem behind the concept of truth’. Dare to leave La Caverna.

Virtual reality
In the digital world, anything that reaches our imagination can be realized.
And much more! Come and celebrate with us the 25th anniversary of the UMH with this day of science in family.
