Taller Cómo es la materia que nos rodea en la Universidad de Alicante

Main event ERN 2023 -UA-Workshop-“The matter around us: what is it like?”

This activity provides an introduction to the atomic structure of matter and to how atoms combine to form different pieces that, once assembled together, like Lego building blocks, give rise to the countless materials around us.

Schedule, Workshop

This activity provides an introduction to the atomic structure of matter and to how atoms combine to form different pieces that, once assembled together, like Lego building blocks, give rise to the countless materials around us. By means of experiments and discovery games, the activity shows the existing types of materials. The difference between crystalline materials, the atoms of which are arranged in an ordered structure, and amorphous materials, with random atomic distribution, is explained. Likewise, participants are shown how atoms can combine to form molecular structures; in turn, these are assembled together to produce all kinds of materials. In general, the properties of materials depend on the type of atoms and molecules and how they combine. Materials science focuses on the smart design of materials for specific applications.
