Main Event ERN 2023 -UMU-Workshop-“Experiments and simulations related to EDP”

Experiments and simulations related to EDP

29/09/2023
Schedule, Workshop

The activities organized are as follows:

  • Patterns of Chladni

We analyze standing waves in two dimensions visualizing the typical modes of plate vibration in different ways that are vibrated at different frequencies after sprinkling sand on them. In this way the “Chladni patterns” and the nodal lines that are formed in the plates are observed, where each pattern corresponds to a proper mode of vibration of the plate. Information on the partial derived equations related to the experiment shall be provided to the applicant.

  • Double pendulum

A double flat pendulum will be constructed, composed of two simple pendulums, one hanging from the pendulum mass of the other, observing a movement that at first may seem periodic but soon reveals itself “unpredictable”. This motion will then be simulated in the computer, observing the strong dependence of the initial conditions, which gives rise in practice to this chaotic movement. Information on the partial derived equations related to the experiment shall be provided to the applicant.
