Students will receive a brief theoretical introduction to the basic concepts of light, the electromagnetic spectrum, and light-matter interaction (colour, absorption, luminescence, etc.). The most common uses of sunlight as a source of sustainable energy will be discussed.
A demonstration of chemiluminescence will be carried out, followed by two practical activities for groups: detection of haemoglobin in blood samples by means of and operation of luminescent bars.
Concepts that are addressed:
1- Luminescence
Through visual examples they will be able to understand the phenomenon of luminescence of both organic and inorganic molecules, some of them in our daily life. Brief introduction to luminescent nanomaterials and their applications in new technologies.
2- Chemiluminescence
How do glow sticks work? During this activity, students will put into practice the concept of chemiluminescence, that is, the production of light from a chemical reaction.
Shall we play detective? Luminol is a molecule capable of generating light when it reacts with an oxidizing agent and is widely used in forensic chemistry for the detection of blood. In this experience, two real samples will be analysed and it will be determined which one contains traces of hemoglobin, thanks to the emission of blue light from luminol.
