The current periodic table consists of 118 chemical elements, of which 90 are naturally occurring. It is now known that everything in the universe is composed of combinations of these 90 natural elements.
However, in Greece around 450 BCE, there was a school of thought that held the belief that all natural beings are composed of a mixture, in varying proportions, of 4 elements: water, air, earth, and fire. This idea, formulated by the natural philosopher and healer Empedocles of Agrigento (495-435 BCE), was the most enduring and influential presocratic theory in history.
